From the author of The Anxious Generation, this fantastic book explains all the reasons behind the move towards smartphone free, in a way that kids will understand and enjoy. For so long parents have said ‘we understand why we need to delay smartphones, but how can we explain it to our kids?’. This book does so brilliantly, empowering children to choose for themselves a healthy approach to their digital wellbeing.
This book is available at a number of libraries throughout Brighton & Hove.
What did you like about this book?
The graphic novel element kept the book interesting and the way everything was phrased - like if it was all a big scrapbook. That way, younger children who struggle to read big books will find it easier. Also, it is very easy to take in because of the style it’s written in.
What does this book teach people?
It teaches people the problems with smartphones and video games and how they can be solved without completely giving them up, like giving you tips to get less addicted. It also shows how young people can still have lots of fun through not using a smartphone or gaming device - often more fun than when using a device.
What do you plan to do with regards to smartphones?
I want to wait until at least 16 to get a smartphone because of the sheer addictiveness and unhappiness that they often bring. I’ve seen how other people find it hard not to use them if they have a free moment and I don’t want to be like that. This book also shows me the amount of other people that share my opinions, so I don’t feel like I’m the only one.
Who do you think this book would be best for?
People who want to know more about the cause. Younger people (5-10 years) who are addicted already or about to get a phone or console. Also, some tween/ teens who don’t really know what smartphone free is all about.
Would you recommend this book?
Depends which people. Some of my friends who are addicted or bigging up the fact that they are about to get a phone, maybe. If they genuinely want to know more about all this, then yes.
